A diamond-shaped border is typical of a Moroccan mosaic table. In addition to its decorative function, it also has a symbolic meaning: as stylized eyes (witch's eyes), square diamonds are said to protect people from all kinds of misfortune. Mosaic artists place a wide variety of patterns and ornaments within this frame. However, one thing always remains the same: the glazed mosaic pieces are first cut from the handcrafted zellige tiles using a sharp-edged hammer. Each tabletop is purely handmade and therefore absolutely unique.
Yellow is the color of the sun and light. The same bright yellow as these zellige diamonds was once achieved by clay burners using a toxic arsenic ore. Since this has become known, harmless pigments have been used. This makes no difference to the color effect: yellow is reminiscent of lemons and beautiful fields of flowers. Combined with the terracotta-colored mosaic tiles, a yellow mosaic table conjures up the summery south in your garden.
