The diamond shape is a typical stylistic feature of the Orient. Strictly speaking, it is usually a square standing on one corner. Symbolizing the eye (witch's eye), the diamond shape is said to protect against the evil eye. The top of this mosaic table is composed entirely of diamonds: a border around the edge and a parquet pattern in the center.
This mosaic bistro table could have been modeled on a mosque floor. The green mosaic pieces (tesserae) are cut from glazed zellije tiles and laid with virtually no joints. Small pieces of terracotta tiles enliven the surface in between. The light-colored diamond border is made of the same material. A beautiful piece that fits particularly well into a leafy and flowering environment.
