Diamonds are characteristic of Moroccan mosaic tables. The upside-down squares have both a decorative and a symbolic function: as stylized eyes (witch's eyes), they are supposed to protect people from all kinds of misfortune. Mosaic artists often combine the diamonds with a wide variety of ornaments. However, one thing always remains the same: the glazed mosaic pieces are first cut from handcrafted zellige tiles using a sharp-edged hammer. Each tabletop is purely handmade and therefore absolutely unique.
Yellow is the color of the sun and light. The same bright yellow as these zellige diamonds was once achieved by clay burners using a toxic arsenic ore. Since this has been discovered, harmless pigments have been used. This makes no difference to the color effect: yellow is reminiscent of lemons and beautiful fields of flowers. Combined with the terracotta-colored mosaic tiles, a yellow mosaic table conjures up the summery south in your garden.
