It is fascinating to watch Moroccan artisans painting glazed tiles. The women and men devote themselves to this beautiful task with concentration and dedication. At this stage, it takes a lot of imagination to visualize the final result: the colors only become so brilliant after the tiles have been fired a second time.
The hand-painted tiles display the entire spectrum of oriental ornamentation: from braided bands to flowers and buds, stars and snails to abstract geometric shapes. Up to five colors shine on the always light, mostly white background. Each color has a symbolic meaning in Islam: white for purity, ochre/yellow for eternity, blue for protection against the evil eye, etc. Typical of hand-painted tiles are the fine black lines that outline every detail.
The small tiles, measuring approx. 10 x 10 cm, are versatile: they can be used in the kitchen for the back wall of the work surface, as a splash guard, counter cladding, coasters, or simply for decoration. How about a colorful tile strip in the bathroom or guest WC, for example?
